When I sleep with the air-conditioner on, my mouth dries up so much that I find myself choking in the morning. Moreover, it sounds like a helicopter! However, with the air-con off I wake up sweating buckets looking like I just got out of a swimming pool with my clothes on. Gutted, I can't win!
This morning I woke up sweaty cos I left the air conditioner off but also had the biggest grin because today is the start of.......my debut New York Fashion Week!
I got ready and strolled the 30 or so blocks to my first show, BCBG Max Azria. I've been walking everywhere since I've been here, as everything is relatively near to where I'm staying. I definitely need the exercise because I've been eating like crap munching at all the fast food places every day. I recks I got my fix and will eat yummy healthy food from now on.
At the entrance of Bryant Park where a lot of the shows will be taking place, a huge crowd was outside. There were Press and photographers, loads of randoms wanting to know what was going on and of course the people with the magic tickets. Some dressed funky which I'm a fan of but a lot of them, including myself, kept it safe and wore black although it was blazing outside. "If in doubt, wear black" I heard once. I wanted to see how NY Fashion Week worked before I went through the gears in what I wear.
In the queue waiting to go in to the BCBG Max Azria show, I met a nice woman called Leslie Garner who works for BCBG. She explained the business side of fashion, especially her department of expertise which was Business Planning for the company. I didn't understand much of it as I'm slow with things like that but I learned a little tis moi.
The show was everything I thought NYC Fashion Week would be and more. It was a beautiful gathering of all the IT and fashionista crowd of NYC, the national and international press along with TV crews and the corporate buyers. The BCBG Max Azria collection rocked and the models looked stunning in the clothes.
All that said, some models looked stupidly thin. It was only a handful that looked raw but enough for some to say, "Ouch" as they walked pass. I was talking to a lady from IMG called Thecla A. Glueck who agreed with me and clued me up on some of the things their company were doing to help the models.
Recently, IMG held a meeting where the models would be given nutritional advice on what to eat so they can have a thin but healthy figure. I really hope it helps as some of the girls will be doing shows all through the fashion weeks (NYC, London, Milan and Paris) that end at the beginning of October with some models doing as many as 60 shows.
Perry Ellis was the next show which was a menswear show. The male models aren't forced to be as thin as the girls so they all looked cool. One of the designs stuck out for me which was the gray jacket with pink polka dots on them. It was done in a manly way which I liked. Oh, Nigel Barker from America's Next Top Model and the guy who plays Ugly Betty's little brother, Mark Indelicato was there!
The last show of my day was menswear designer Duckie Brown. I was extremely impressed with the new collection except you would never see me wearing the leggings they had on show. Saying that, I got a lot of inspiration on what to wear.
So knackered and tis only the first day! I plonked out for a bit at the Valentino Exhibition.
New York is rocking!
